About this spot

Built in 1756 by Spanish
Jesuit priest Fr. Jose
Ducos, the historic
Cotta Fort, or El Fuerte
de la Concepcion y del
Triunfo, is one of the
most iconic landmarks
of Ozamiz City.
Strategically located
along the shores of
Panguil Bay, it served as
a Spanish military
outpost to defend
against Moro pirate
attacks during the Spanish period. Its lighthouse, rising above the stone walls, is the first
structure visible to travelers arriving by sea. Restored in 2002, Cotta Fort remains a symbol of
the city’s colonial past, with its four bulwarks—San Fernando, San Jose, Santiago, and San
Ignacio—standing as enduring reminders of its defensive role and the survival of Christianity in
Misamis Occidental. Today, it draws tourists seeking heritage, history, and panoramic bay views.
