The Provincial Capitol, designed by
National Artist for Architecture Juan
Arellano, was built in 1935 and stands
as a neoclassical landmark of
governance and resilience. It has a
βtwinβ in Surigao del Norte,
constructed using the same design
and plans. During World War II,
Filipino guerrilla forces declared
Oroquieta City and the Capitol as the
seat of the Free Philippines, with
emergency currency printed in
nearby Jimenez. The Capitol grounds
are believed to be the final resting place of many fallen guerrillas, making it a sacred ground
honoring the courage and sacrifice of Misamisnon heroes.
